Pride, Equality and the Rights of Every Albertan!
As Calgary celebrates Pride Week, the Progressive Tory Party of Alberta stands with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and with every Albertan who believes that our province should be a place where people are treated with dignity, respect and equality.
Our position is simple: human rights belong to everyone.
That is why the Progressive Tory Party has committed to repealing legislation that has used the notwithstanding clause to override the rights of Albertans. Fundamental rights should not become political tools, and governments should be held to the highest standard when they seek to limit them.
Pride is a celebration, and it is also a reminder that the rights and freedoms we value must be protected for everyone — not only when it is easy or politically convenient to do so.
No Albertan should have to wonder whether their fundamental rights will be respected because of who they are, whom they
love, where they come from, what they believe, or how they choose to live their life. We may not always agree with one another, but equality before the law and respect for individual rights should never depend on agreement.
Our commitment extends beyond Pride. We believe in an Alberta where everyone belongs and everyone’s rights matter. Government should protect those rights, not selectively suspend them.
During Calgary Pride, we celebrate the contributions of 2SLGBTQ+ Albertans to our families, workplaces, communities and province. We also reaffirm something larger: our commitment to building an Alberta where every person can participate fully in society, live with dignity, and know that their rights will be respected.
To everyone celebrating Pride in Calgary this week: Happy Pride. You are part of Alberta, you are valued, and you belong.
