Mr. Guthrie previously held senior cabinet positions in the Government of Alberta, serving as Minister of Energy and later Minister of Infrastructure. In February 2025, he resigned from cabinet, citing concerns regarding government procurement practices.
Following his departure from the UCP, Mr. Guthrie committed himself to rebuilding a moderate, principled conservative movement in Alberta – one grounded in integrity, accountability, and respect for democratic institutions. On December 9, 2025, he was selected as leader of the Progressive Tory Party of Alberta, which he will lead into future elections.
During his time in the Legislature, Mr. Guthrie has served on several standing committees, including Resource Stewardship, Families and Communities, and Public Accounts.
Before entering elected office, he spent nearly 20 years as a private business owner in the ranching and retail sectors. A professional engineer by training, Mr. Guthrie worked in the chemical and manufacturing industries for 8 years and holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta.
Mr. Guthrie and his wife of 30 years have two adult children. He was sworn in as the 920th Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
